What do I need to know about internal doors and screens?

Internal doors have traditionally been made of wood, hardboard, medium-density fibreboard (MDF), solid, or hollow core, each with a different weight, price point, feature set, and style. Now, we have an alternative: aluminium doors and screens, which are simple to fit, easy to buy, and widely available.

Aluminium internal doors and screens provide an altogether different aesthetic. They are significantly thinner than timber doors and cheaper than steel doors. They are also available as all-glass, minimal frame, or frameless designs. Internal doors and screens also come in the black steel look also know as Art Deco, Crittall®, 1920s, 1930s, heritage, and industrial style look.

The quality of the aluminium profile, the application of the colour finish, and the glass and hardware quality across the aluminium internal doors and screen products are consistent. 

While still using quality aluminium profiles, internal products usually don’t need the features that come with exterior doors, such as thermal insulation, high security, weather protection, double glazing, and energy efficiency. Therefore, they tend to be cheaper and have faster delivery times.

Internal doors and screens tend to be single-glazed. However, double-glazed options are available at an extra cost when privacy, acoustics, or enhanced security are required

The only area where aluminium frames are not a suitable product internally is where a fire rating is required.

1. Slim sightlines are by far the biggest advantage, with only steel products being marginally thinner.
2. The aluminium components also allow the use of more glass, with many internal doors and screens having glass edges and only the essential metal components. 
3. The choice of opening options, sizes and designs is also greater with aluminium. Internal doors and screens can be wider and taller in aluminium. Opening options include hinged, sliding, folding, stacking or sliding into walls. With an innovative opening and closing action, pivot internal doors offer even wider and taller doors than the hinged ones.
4. Other than the genuine steel product, there’s no other material than aluminium for recreating industrial, heritage, 1920s, 1930s, Art Deco and black steel look glazing. Most aluminium-framed products use a similar construction with mitred corner joints at the frames and doors, without the welded complexity or cost of steel products
5. The ability to install matching aluminium external windows and doors is a bonus—something not usually desirable with PVC

 

Where can I use internal doors and screens in aluminium?

The current trend for slim framed glass doors and internal screens means these products are suitable for numerous uses, not just regular doorways.

Internal doors between rooms are the most obvious solution. However, choose the right product; these doors will work in bathrooms, shower rooms, and cloakrooms. You can divide a hallway, conservatory or a larger room to create insulation, separation, and clearly defined spaces. When creating a room divider, these door types provide hinged, sliding, folding or stacking solutions. More recently, specialist installers have been providing internal doors and screens to wine cellars, wardrobe doors, staircase doors, creating storage space and even shower screens.

Prices and specifications vary between brands and from product to product. Some companies specialise only in interior glass products; quality home improvement and glazing firms will also provide external doors and windows.
